    Introducing Ethical Inquiries.Peter Collins - 2018 - Philosophia: International Journal of Philosophy (Philippine e-journal) 19 (1):23-37.
The problematic features of teaching philosophical ethics are inextricably linked to, and are dependent upon, the problematic features of philosophical ethics itself. This thesis is exemplified by two radically diverse approaches to searching for the good and the good life. The differences within each approach are discussed in terms of the principles of Plato and St. Augustine, on one hand, and William James and John Dewey, on the other hand. Before introducing their thoughts, attention is given to a context of (...)

  3. Martin Buber on Transcending the World — In the World.Peter Collins - 2013 - Philosophia 41 (2).
Martin Buber’s sustained effort to transcend the world—in the world— can be explained by his interpretation of Hasidism and his philosophy of dialogue. His motivation is derived from personal and cultural circumstances; indigenous to both was what he called the “eclipse of God,” the disappearance of God from the world, which he viewed as the culprit in the disintegration of authentic human values. He learned and taught that human persons encounter God , not by escaping the world, but by “redeeming” (...)

Josef Pieper [1904-1997], a popular and prolific German philosopher, is probably best known for his small volume Leisure: The basis of culture . The book in review, Tradition: Concept and claim, was published originally in 1970, but the first English translation came out in 2008. Undoubtedly, Pieper, if he were still alive, would claim that the message of Tradition bears the same kind of importance today as it did in 1970—perhaps of even greater significance today due to the further development (...)

Terry Eagleton. The meaning of life: A very short introductionOxford: University Press, 2007, 109 pp.For a very short introduction to the meaning of life, this 109-page volume provokes much reflection upon many possible meanings of life. The topic of the book is examined from innumerable perspectives. While the author does not seem to hide his personal views, he does not manifest them as directly as the reader might wish. The meaning of life is well-written and witty; it has four chapters, (...)

Massive Modularity, Content Integration, and Language.Collin Rice - 2011 - Philosophy of Science 78 (5):800-812.
One of the obstacles facing massive modularity is how a pervasively modular mind might generate non-domain-specific thoughts by integrating the content produced by various domain-specific modules. Peter Carruthers has recently argued that the operations of the language faculty are constitutive of the process by which the human mind is able to integrate content from heterogeneous conceptual domains. In this article, I first argue that Carruthers's data do not provide support for either of two possible interpretations of his thesis. In (...)

Relational autonomy in informed consent (RAIC) as an ethics of care approach to the concept of informed consent.Peter I. Osuji - 2018 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 21 (1):101-111.
The perspectives of the dominant Western ethical theories, have dominated the concepts of autonomy and informed consent for many years. Recently this dominant understanding has been challenged by ethics of care which, although, also emanates from the West presents a more nuanced concept: relational autonomy, which is more faithful to our human experience. By paying particular attention to relational autonomy, particularity and Process approach to ethical deliberations in ethics of care, this paper seeks to construct a concept of informed consent (...)

Forms of Exchange: Education, Economics and the Neglect of Social Contingency.Peter Cope & John I’Anson - 2003 - British Journal of Educational Studies 51 (3):219-232.
Economics is privileged in contemporary government policy such that all human transactions are seen as economic forms of exchange. Education has been discursively restructured according to the logic of the market, with education policy being increasingly colonised by economic policy imperatives. This paper explores some of the consequences of this reframing which draws upon metaphors from industrial and business domains. This paper examines a significant dimension of teaching that currently has marginal presence in official discourse: social contingency. We argue that (...)

Building on the long-standing tradition of challenging oppression and questioning whose interests are being served in the field of language education, we report on a study that involved a group of U.S.-based graduate students who collaborated with a ninth-grade English teacher in Nepal. The study comes out of a larger project that sought to internationalize the curriculum of a graduate educational linguistics course at a U.S. university. At the heart of this internationalizing curriculum endeavour was a commitment to expose graduate (...)

While much excitement has been generated surrounding evidence-based medicine, internal documents from the pharmaceutical industry suggest that the publicly available evidence base may not accurately represent the underlying data regarding its products. The industry and its associated medical communication firms state that publications in the medical literature primarily serve marketing interests. Suppression and spinning of negative data and ghostwriting have emerged as tools to help manage medical journal publications to best suit product sales, while disease mongering and market segmentation of (...)

Between a conditional’s antecedent and its consequent: Discourse coherence vs. probabilistic relevance.Karolina Krzyżanowska, Peter J. Collins & Ulrike Hahn - 2017 - Cognition 164 (C):199-205.
Reasoning with conditionals is central to everyday life, yet there is long-standing disagreement about the meaning of the conditional. One example is the puzzle of so-called missing-link conditionals such as "if raccoons have no wings, they cannot breathe under water." Their oddity may be taken to show that conditionals require a connection between antecedent ("raccoons have no wings") and consequent ("they cannot breathe under water"), yet most accounts of conditionals attribute the oddity to natural language pragmatics. We present an experimental (...)

    What's the Point?Roger C. Schank, Gregg C. Collins, Ernest Davis, Peter N. Johnson, Steve Lytinen & Brian J. Reiser - 1982 - Cognitive Science 6 (3):255-275.
We present a theory of conversation comprehension in which a line of the conversation is “understood” by relating it to one of seven possible “points”. We define these points, and present examples where it seems plausible that the failure to “get the point” would indeed constitute a failure to understand the conversation. We argue that the recognition of such points must proceed in both a top down and bottom up fashion, and thus is likely to be quite complicated. Finally, we (...)

In this paper, new evidence is presented for the assumption that the reason-relation reading of indicative conditionals ('if A, then C') reflects a conventional implicature. In four experiments, it is investigated whether relevance effects found for the probability assessment of indicative conditionals (Skovgaard-Olsen, Singmann, and Klauer, 2016a) can be classified as being produced by a) a conversational implicature, b) a (probabilistic) presupposition failure, or c) a conventional implicature. After considering several alternative hypotheses and the accumulating evidence from other studies as (...)

Conditionals and Testimony.Stephan Hartmann, Peter J. Collins, Karolina Krzyżanowska, Gregory Wheeler & Ulrike Hahn - 2020 - Cognitive Psychology 122.
Conditionals and conditional reasoning have been a long-standing focus of research across a number of disciplines, ranging from psychology through linguistics to philosophy. But almost no work has concerned itself with the question of how hearing or reading a conditional changes our beliefs. Given that we acquire much—perhaps most—of what we believe through the testimony of others, the simple matter of acquiring conditionals via others’ assertion of a conditional seems integral to any full understanding of the conditional and conditional reasoning. (...)

Why Firms Engage in Corruption: A Top Management Perspective.Jamie D. Collins, Klaus Uhlenbruck & Peter Rodriguez - 2009 - Journal of Business Ethics 87 (1):89-108.
This study builds upon the top management literature to predict and test antecedents to firms’ engagement in corruption. Building on a survey of 341 executives in India, we find that if executives have social ties with government officials, their firms are more likely to engage in corruption. Further, these executives are likely to rationalize engaging in corruption as a necessity for being competitive. The results collectively illustrate the role that executives’ social ties and perceptions have in shaping illegal actions of (...)

It is widely held that there are important differences between indicative conditionals (e.g. “If the authors are linguists, they have written a linguistics paper”) and subjunctive conditionals (e.g. “If the authors had been linguists, they would have written a linguistics paper”). A central difference is that indicatives and subjunctives convey different stances towards the truth of their antecedents. Indicatives (often) convey neutrality: for example, about whether the authors in question are linguists. Subjunctives (often) convey the falsity of the antecedent: for (...)

Much of what we believe we know, we know through the testimony of others. While there has been long-standing evidence that people are sensitive to the characteristics of the sources of testimony, for example in the context of persuasion, researchers have only recently begun to explore the wider implications of source reliability considerations for the nature of our beliefs. Likewise, much remains to be established concerning what factors influence source reliability. In this paper, we examine, both theoretically and empirically, the (...)

In this paper, a novel experimental task is developed for testing the highly influential, but experimentally underexplored, possible worlds account of conditionals (Stalnaker, 1968; Lewis, 1973). In Experiment 1, this new task is used to test both indicative and subjunctive conditionals. For indicative conditionals, five competing truth tables are compared, including the previously untested, multi-dimensional possible worlds semantics of Bradley (2012). In Experiment 2, these results are replicated and it is shown that they cannot be accounted for by an alternative (...)

Changing Ideals in Modern Architecture revolutionized the understanding of modernism in architecture, pushing back the sense of its origin from the early twentieth century to the 1750s and thus placing architectural thought within the a broader context of Western intellectual history. This new edition of Peter Collins's ground-breaking study includes all seventy-two illustrations of the original hard cover edition, which has been out of print since 1967, and restores the large format.

The term "humanism" bears many meanings. The origin of its usage is associated with the Renaissance, but it can also be predicated on the thought of earlier and later generations. The most general purpose of this paper is to suggest the inevitable reliance of an array of meanings of "humanism" upon philosophical categories. To support this thesis, the author attempts to clarify some fundamental differences between the philosophical humanisms of Auguste Comte [1798-1957] and Blaise Pascal [1623-1662]. For purposes of expansion (...)
